J>G: What Will You Do For Me?

WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR ME?
John 6:35-40
Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me. However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them. For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”

Jesus>Gimmick

What brings you to church?
What keeps you going back?
What are you really learning?
Colossians 3:16-17
Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

Seven Houses: Laodicea

SEVEN HOUSES: LAODICEA
When was the last time you confidently made a decision? Did you stick with it? It isn’t always easy to do. In a world that dedicates a whole entire row in the grocery store to cereal, it’s easy for us to be indecisive and even insecure with the decisions we do make. This type of world keeps us in a state of uncertainty. We can easily flake out on our friends. We can easily leave behind a commitment we made with our “had something else going on” attitude. We can also leave God at church or at bible study. We can become undefined, apathetic believers. People who define themselves as christians but show no signs of Christ. This week we look at Laodicea, the seventh and last community that John writes to in Revelation. Jesus calls them worthy of being spit out. They are neither hot nor cold. They call themselves believers but they are wrapped up in themselves and into their wealth. Like Laodicea, we can often be confident in our decision to trust God until another option comes along. When was the last time you set your faith to the side? Has it become stagnant? What does your faith look like?
Revelation 3:14-22
“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s new creation:
“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.
“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.
“Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.”

IDENTIFYING GOD: Revelation 3:14
Job 38:1-7; 40:8-14 – “Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his?
- Jesus confidently defines Himself. Does this make it easier or harder to believe in him? Explain.
- How does your confidence compare?
DEFINING HOUSE: Revelation 3:15-17
Matthew 6:19-34 – “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
James 3:7-16 – …blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water?
- How easy is it for you to be distracted from God and put your faith “to the side”?
- Would you say that your faith is stagnant?
THE CHALLENGE: Revelation 3:18-19
Psalm 1 – They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
Luke 4:5-8 – Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”
Colossians 2:1-5 – I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- Being confident in your decision to believe in God produces actions, or ‘fruit’, that prove it. Would you say that the fruit in your life represents God?
- God has better things to offer us. Do you trust this? Do you live your life like you do?
A PROMISE: Revelation 3:20-22
Jeremiah 17:5-10 – “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
2 Corinthians 3:4-6 – We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ. It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.
- Do you need to relinquish the throne of your life to Jesus tonight?
- You can be confident in your life and faith because of Jesus. Believe it. Pray together.
